Beam
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Beam is aCopy Ability primarily obtained by absorbing an energy beam-using enemy, such asWaddle Doos orLaser Balls, as well as by usingCopy Essences. It allowsKirby to perform several electric beam attacks, such as a magical beam whip with a wide range, which is useful for hittingswitches,Bomb Blocks, andStar Blocks behind solid walls in order to get to hidden areas and items. Typically, Kirby obtains a red and orange jester hat when this Copy Ability is obtained.
Beam is among Kirby's oldest Copy Abilities, first appearing inKirby's Adventure, and having solid representation in the series since then. In addition to the base ability, there are several spin-off powers and forms, including theBeam Mage, theRobobotBeam Mode, and theFlare BeamSuper Ability. It is also able to infuse allies' weapons with the ZapPower Effect inKirby Star Allies.
Characteristics[edit]

Beam is among the very first Copy Abilities in theKirby series, first appearing inKirby's Adventure, and showing up in a large array of subsequent games. In its simplest form, it allows Kirby to fire a short-range line of energy that starts high and drags downward. Using this ability forces Kirby to stop for a brief moment, but its range allows him to strike targets before they reach him, or even through walls. Used while falling, it can be an effective means of dealing with many foes ahead of Kirby, but using it above abottomless pit may pose a danger, preventing Kirby from acting out of the attack until it is too late.
In later titles, Beam would gain a larger moveset, adding to its versatility. This includes the momentum-preserving aerial Beam Blast attack to rain tiny projectiles on enemies below, the powerful Wave Beam that can penetrate through foes, and the Capture Beam, which allows Kirby to grab and blast away enemies up close. Beam can also activatewires or imbue allies with the ZapPower Effect. One particular derivative of Beam - theBeam Mage - even gains the ability to stop time with his Beam attacks.
Beam's most recognizable and common provider is the cyclopticWaddle Doo, who regularly uses the Beam Whip as his main attack. However, other enemies and projectiles can provide the Beam ability, includingKing Doo,Gemra,Laser Ball, and the drones fromSecurity Force.
Appearance[edit]
Ever since receiving a hat inKirby Super Star, Beam's design has been considerably consistent, although minor variations and quirks have existed. At core, Beam's hat is a two pointed jester hat (similar toMarx's in design), with one half being orange, the other red. It also has a brim that is shaped similarly to a traditional crown, featuring multiple triangle shapes pointed upwards. At the tip of each of the two parts of the hat, there is a pompom. Usually, only one part of the hat has a white star pattern to it (usually the orange one), although artwork has occasionally featured both parts with the star pattern. In most cases, the orange side is to Kirby's right, while the red one is to his left.
Beam's rod, also introduced inKirby Super Star, has not had many design changes either since its introduction. It is essentially a staff with a round gem at its tip, with a small base supporting said gem. The base is usually depicted as a ring with various small orbs around it, with sizes varying on each media. The staff is generally gold, while the gem is usually blue, green or teal.
Beam changes Kirby's color to yellow/orange inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra. This color change is also present in its trophies inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, and sometimes in side media and merchandise.

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

Beam Kirby first appeared inKirby's Adventure where his Copy Abilities debuted. This ability allows Kirby to swing a beam whip downwards in front of him by pressing the B button. This ability appears largely unchanged inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, but its visuals have been updated, giving Kirby his cap fromKirby Super Star and causing his face to light up when he uses it.
InKirby's Adventure, Beam deals 3 damage.[1] InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Beam deals 4 damage.[2] Due toWaddle Doo being the first ability-providing enemy that Kirby encounters inVegetable Valley - Stage 1, Beam is the first obtainable ability in the entire series.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Beam Kirby appears inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra, this time with an expanded moveset. Its providers areWaddle Doo andLaser Ball, as well asCopy Essences. InMilky Way Wishes, Kirby may also obtain and keep the Beam ability by usingCopy Essence Deluxes. If Kirby has the Beam ability, he may transform the ability into aWaddle Doo as a helper. Kirby's appearance changes with a jester hat with stars, as well as turning amber. In these games,1-Ups will also turn this color. InKirby Super Star only, ifCopy is used onChef Kawasaki via Analyze Beam during the battle against him, the Beam ability is one of the possible abilities Kirby can get - the others areWing,Cutter andSword.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
Beam appears inKirby: Canvas Curse, provided once again by Waddle Doo. When Kirby has the ability, tapping him will propel him forward as he emits a beam whip which travels around his ball-shaped body, hitting anything within range, similar toKracko's beam attack. Holding Kirby will let him continue emitting the beam whip while holding still in place, even in the air.
The playableWaddle Doo has the same ability, and cannot lose or discard it.
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Beam returns inKirby: Squeak Squad, functioning the same as inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. AnAbility Scroll can be collected for the ability which upgrades its power, turning the regular Beam Whip attack into the "Super Beam Whip" (スーパービームウイップ[3]), and allows it to create sparks that travel along metal surfaces.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
Beam Kirby reappears inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, utilizing the expanded moveset fromKirby Super Star and its remake unlike preceding games likeKirby & The Amazing Mirror andKirby: Squeak Squad. In addition, Kirby can execute an infinite loop beam whip in midair.
There is a Super Ability variant known asFlare Beam.

Other[edit]
- Main article:Beam Mage
Beam appears under a different guise as the roleBeam Mage from theKirby Clash series of spin-off titles. The only major difference between the abilities is that Beam Mage's "Wave Beam" is upgraded into the "Time Beam", which can be charged to three different levels of power, and stops time for an enemy when they are hit enough times with the move.
While Beam does not appear as a copy ability inKirby Air Riders,Waddle Doo can fire beams as a playable character and can also use Beam's rod to attack with hisSpecial.

So much potential from a beam! And now, he wants to see why the beam... bends!"

- In artwork forKirby Super Star and its remake, the Beam ability hat is depicted as red on the right and orange on the left, with stars on both sides. In all other games (in addition to Kirby's in-game sprites in the previous games mentioned), it is depicted as the reverse, orange on the right and red on the left; additionally, only the orange side has stars.
