This article is about Another Dimension in a more general context. For other uses of Another Dimension, seeAnother Dimension (disambiguation).

Another Dimension (usually formatted as "another dimension") is the name given to a strange eerie alternate dimension featured many times in theKirby series, first appearing inKirby's Return to Dream Land. It is the home of theSphere Doomers, as well as several very powerfulparallel versions of bosses from Kirby's native dimension. WheneverKirby and his friends are tasked to enter this dimension, it is usually in order to stop some powerful villains from wreaking havoc in Kirby's home dimension.

Description[edit]

An empty portion of Another Dimension, as seen inKirby's Return to Dream Land.

Another Dimension is characterized by large empty spaces filled with strange swirling patterns and energy. It can be seen as closely linked to Kirby's native dimension in that several images and impressions of places from said dimension will appear in the background of Another Dimension. Where there is solid ground, it is usually depicted as glowing yellow blocky formations which often shift and can easilycrush when doing so. Large spiky star-shaped hazards also float freely in this area, making it generally hostile to navigate through. It is stated several times, particularly in the Japanese versions, that Another Dimension is beyond both time and space.

Some areas in Another Dimension take place in those that resemble parts of Kirby's home dimension, depicted with monochromatic or washed-out colors. InKirby's Return to Dream Land and itsremake, these areas usually have purple (magenta inExtra Mode) walls that serve as a crushing hazard for Kirby and friends should they not move fast, in addition to a battle with aSphere Doomer at the end. InKirby Star Allies, battles with parallel bosses take place in a version of their boss arena with alternate colors.

Kirby and other characters are capable of opening rifts to Another Dimension from their home dimension usingsufficiently powerful attacks or advancedancient technology. More information on what can exactly open these rifts are located in the "Dimensional rift" subsection under#Related terms.

Naming discrepancies[edit]

Another Dimension has been referred to with several varying terms throughout the series sinceKirby's Return to Dream Land, and this characteristic is even more prominent in the Japanese versions of said games. For reference, the term used to refer to Another Dimension in Japanese is "異空間いくうかん" (ikūkan), and localized English versions tend to refer to Another Dimension as such or in completely lowercase letters ("another dimension"), though it's sometimes referred to as an "extra dimension" in the British translation ofKirby: Planet Robobot, or as a "different dimension" inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. However, Japanese texts throughout the series also refer to Another Dimension with different terms like "異空いくう" (ikū, "another sky"), "別次元べつじげん" (betsu jigen, "another dimension" or "different dimension") and "異界いかい" or "異世界いせかい" (ikai orisekai, "another world"), among others. In some cases, this leads to discrepancies when various sources of text referencing Another Dimension (includingpause screen flavor text and dialogue) and even similar texts that aren't directly related to Another Dimension are localized, especially in English versions of various games.

Another World (別の世界/異世界/異界)[edit]

Most parallel bosses inKirby Star Allies use "異世界いせかい" or "異界いかい" (isekai orikai, "another world") in their splash screen titles and their collective term in Japanese, the "Otherworldly Four Heavenly Kings" (異界四天王いかいしてんのう). The only exceptions areParallel Twin Kracko andParallel Big Kracko, who are described as being from "異空いくう" (another sky).Ikai is also used to refer toParallel Landia's origin in the description of the Parallel Landion fromSuper Kirby Clash.[1]. The English version refers to this as "another world", a more direct translation.

In the Japanese version ofKirby's Return to Dream Land,Magolor refers toHalcandra as "a different world" (べつのセカイ,betsu no sekai). This line of dialogue is translated as being located in "another dimension" in the English versions. Its full name is given in the Japanese title of the "Halcandra: A New Enemy" cutscene as "Another World Halcandra" (異世界いせかいハルカンドラisekai harukandora). In the Japanese version ofKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Magolor describes himself as being from "another world" (isekai), which is again translated in the English version as "another dimension". The Magoloran Garb inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe andSuper Kirby Clash also describes Magolor as being from "another world" (isekai); this is translated properly in the English versions.[2] In another piece of dialogue earlier inReturn to Dream Land, Magolor specifies that Halcandra lies at the end of an interdimensional tunnel;concept art from the developers clarifies that Halcandra is not actually located in another dimension, and instead merely requires passing through another dimension to reach due to its physical distance from Popstar.

Another Sky (異空)[edit]

Another related term used prominently in Japanese to refer to Another Dimension is異空いくう (ikū), which can be translated as either "another sky", "another world" or "another dimension". It is simply a one-character shortening of the commonly-used Japanese name for Another Dimension, "異空間いくうかん". This is the term first used in the Japanese name of the music track "Interdimensional Traveler" fromKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, which is "異空いくうヲカケル旅人たびびと" (The Traveler Across Another Dimension). It is also shared with the subtitle ofMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler (マホロアエピローグ異空イクウをかける旅人タビビト).

The Japanese version ofKirby Star Allies uses this term to refer to Another Dimension in the pause screen flavor text forHeroes in Another Dimension.[3]. As mentioned in the previous section,Parallel Twin Kracko andParallel Big Kracko are described in their boss splash screen text to be from "another sky" in the Japanese version of the game. Various Japanese names for some tracks inKirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack also use the term, including "The Dimension to Win" (異空いくうをかけたたたかい lit. "The Battle Another Sky is Gambled Upon") and "Dimensional Silence" (originally fromKirby's Return to Dream Land,異空いくう静寂せいじゃく lit. "Silence of Another Sky").

Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler makes prominent use of this term when referring to several texts, such as explicitly referring to Magolor falling into "the depths of another dimension" in Japanese.[4]. Various titles for the Japanese flavor text of various bosses in this mode incorporate this term, with one example being "Otherworldly Elevangelist" (異空いくう電導師でんどうし) forElectricky Dooter.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

A dimensional rift and the Another Dimension stretch inKirby's Return to Dream Land.

ThroughoutKirby's Return to Dream Land, star-shaped rifts leading to Another Dimension can be opened by usingSuper Abilities, usually when a very large object has been destroyed with said ability. These interdimensional stretches appear monochrome. When Kirby enters a rift to Another Dimension, he automatically loses his current Super Ability and/orCopy Ability, forcing him to make use of hisInhale and other normal moves throughout these sections. These stretches also have moving purple walls that threaten tocrush Kirby, and can be pushed back usingStar Bullets.

At the end of an interdimensional segment, Kirby usually battles aSphere Doomer that drops a pair of Energy Spheres upon defeat. This results in color being restored to the area, and Kirby and friends can exit back to the regular stage by entering anotherdimensional rift. If Kirby is defeated while inside an interdimensional segment, he is forced out of the rift and has to start from the beginning if it is entered again. The music for these sections is also appropriately named "Another Dimension".

Level 8: Another Dimension[edit]

Later in the adventure, afterMagolor betrays Kirby and his friends, he exits through a rift to Another Dimension with the intent of befalling Planet Popstar to his rule, supposedly stranding Kirby and friends inHalcandra. However,Landia offers to let them ride on his back and pursue Magolor through the portal. Throughout the entirety of theAnother Dimension level, Kirby and friends ride fly through several side-scrolling shooter segments, while also dealing with moving walls, Sphere Doomer-like creatures, and pulsating crystals. Eventually, Kirby and friends do battle withMagolor in an eerie, glowing area with Popstar visible through a distant rift. After the friends defeat Magolor'ssecond form, the surrounding dimension begins to collapse, and Landia comes to the rescue to bring them home, with theLor Starcutter also following and ensuring stability of the rift ahead.

In theKirby FightersSub-Game inKirby: Triple Deluxe, the last fight againstShadow Kirby in Single Player mode takes place in Another Dimension, even using the samemusic as inKirby's Return to Dream Land. This Battle Stage can also be selected for play in Training and Multiplayer modes.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

The pause screen text forHolo-Doomers 2.0 inKirby: Planet Robobot makes mention of Another Dimension when referring to theSphere Doomers, however it is unknown where and whenSusie encountered them during her travels.Star Dream also appears to be capable of opening rifts to Another Dimension, which is how it summonedGalacta Knight inMeta Knightmare Returns. During the battle with Galacta Knight Returns, he will occasionally open a rift to Another Dimension as an attack, with theLor Starcutter occasionally making an appearance in this rift.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe &Super Kirby Clash[edit]

A few of the bosses, specificallyGreater Doomer,Parallel Landia andParallel Susie, hail from what is presumed to be Another Dimension. InTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe, theBlack Mirror is used as a gateway between dimensions. InSuper Kirby Clash, the main villainParallel Nightmare also hails from Another Dimension. Just like inKirby: Planet Robobot,Aeon Hero can open up a rift to Another Dimension as an attack, with theJamba Heart also appearing in the background occasionally.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

The final major update toKirby Star Allies adds a new mode to the game,Heroes in Another Dimension. In this mode, Kirby and friends travel through different dimensions taking place within Another Dimension, collectingFriend Hearts and battling parallel bosses as they go. The rift here is opened by Hyness' continuous praying at the altar inThe Divine Terminus, and more of these rifts are opened as the player progresses throughout this mode.

In the same update,The Divine Terminus inGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! has a pool in the floor that features the background of Another Dimension. DefeatingHyness in this mode will cause him to sink into the pool, a subtle hint towards the events ofHeroes in Another Dimension.

The Japanese pause screen text forMorpho Knight EX states that it comes from Another Dimension.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Four Kirbys in a now more colorful Another Dimension segment.

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, both the Another Dimension segments accessed from dimensional rifts and the eponymous level return. The former now have slightly washed-out colors as opposed to a monochrome palette; moreover, if Kirby is defeated, reentering the rift will start from the room Kirby was defeated in. By virtue ofSouvenir Items being usable, the segments are no longer necessarily cleared byNormal Kirby.

Additionally, most of the newly addedMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler takes place deep within Another Dimension, with its surrounding dimensions featuring some degree of color tint corresponding to the theming of its many stages. Many of the mode's stages also featureDarpas,Dippas,Dupas, andDeppas, which were originally exclusive to the Another Dimension level. These dimensions are also home to different elemental bosses (specificallyElectricky Dooter,Fiery Puffer andHydriath) and theRampaging Doomers, although their relation to parallel bosses is unknown. Eventually, Magolor escapes through a dimensional rift at the end of the mode, which takes him to theDream Kingdom.

Related terms[edit]

The following are some common terms that are related to Another Dimension but are not used to refer to the place itself.

Dimensional rifts[edit]

— VS Grand Doomer EX description fromKirby's Return to Dream Land

Various star-shaped rifts called "dimensional rifts" appear throughout the series, starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land. The many dimensional rifts that are encountered by Kirby throughout the game are said to have been created byEnergy Spheres, and lead to stretches within Another Dimension which usually culminate in a battle with aSphere Doomer. These rifts are colored indigo inStory Mode, but gain a slightly reddish purple hue inExtra Mode.

Generally speaking, these dimensional rifts are usually the main mode of transport to Another Dimension, oftentimes manifesting with the power of magical spells or ancient technology. The following is a list of every entity/technique which have been confirmed to open rifts connecting to Another Dimension:

Some entities likeGreater Doomer,Parallel Susie, and enemies that grant Super Abilities inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe also emerge from dimensional rifts, but how they were opened is unclear.

Another Dimension Road[edit]

A related term used in Japanese versions ofKirby's Return to Dream Land and inKirby: Planet Robobot is "Another Dimension Road" (異空間いくうかんロード,ikūkan rōdo), translated as "interdimensional tunnel" or "inter-dimensional tunnel" in English. It is used in the former game to refer to the space wherePlanet Popstar andHalcandra are connected[5], and is also where the entirety of theAnother Dimension level takes place.[6][7]Star Dream also refers to "Another Dimension Road" during the process of summoningGalacta Knight in the Japanese version ofKirby: Planet Robobot[8], but is interestingly translated as "extra-dimensional road" instead of "interdimensional tunnel" in the English versions. The Japanese version of theSuper Kirby Clash Channel further explains thatParallel Nightmare summonedAeon Hero through "Another Dimension Road".[9]

In the original Wii version ofKirby's Return to Dream Land,HR-D3 and Galacta Knight are both described as originating from "another dimension" in English, but the Japanese version describes them as originating from "a different dimension that is not this one" (ココとはちがう べつジゲン). InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Japanese versions of both pause screens are notably changed to specifically mention "Another Dimension Road", which is translated appropriately in the English version as "an interdimensional tunnel" in both cases.

Parallel bosses[edit]

Main article:Category:Parallel bosses
Parallel Susie is the first known parallel boss in theKirby series, appearing in games likeTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe andSuper Kirby Clash.

There are several bosses that originate from Another Dimension which are categorized as "parallel bosses", extremely powerful counterparts of bosses existing within Kirby's home dimension. Like most stronger variants, parallel bosses are depicted with an alternate color scheme, usually with a dark palette (as demonstrated prominently onParallel Landia andParallel Woods). It is often the case that parallel bosses have a very high amount ofhealth and feature a variety of more difficult attacks to further present a challenge to the player.

The names of parallel bosses are usually prefixed with "Parallel" in English and the French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese localizations deriving from it. However, the Japanese, German, Italian and Korean versions use the prefix "Another" while the Chinese versions use "Another Dimension", which further reinforce the relation of these bosses to Another Dimension itself.

Parallel bosses are not to be confused with other bosses that originate from Another Dimension but are not based on existing bosses, such asGrand Doomer and theRampaging Doomers. Additionally, despite the three elemental bosses fromMagolor Epilogue (Electricky Dooter,Fiery Puffer, andHydriath) originating from the deeper portions of Another Dimension while bearing a resemblance tosomeexistingbosses, they are also not classified as parallel bosses either.
