Adeleine

| ||||||||||||||
- This article is about Adeleine from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. For the character from Kirby's Dream Land 3 who might possibly be Adeleine herself, seeAdo.
| “ | Adeleine, an aspiring young artist, comes to Pop Star to study art but finds herself in the middle of a Dark Matter mess. | ” | — Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards instruction booklet, pg. 22 |
Adeleine (/ˈæ.də.laɪn/)[1] is a young painter and major character in theKirby series, who joins forces withKirby in his quest to collect theCrystal Shards inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. She looks like a human girl, which causes her to stand out greatly from many otherKirby series characters, particularly due to the fact that she stands at roughly twice the height of Kirby. Her name is a Germanization of the French "Adeline", which is diminutive for "Adele" (nobility).
Adeleine is not native to Popstar, and instead visits the planet to study art. Her homeworld isleft unspecified. She bears a strong resemblance toAdo, both in appearance and mannerisms, but whether or not they are the same character isleft ambiguous.
Characteristics[edit]
Always seen with her easel by her side, Adeleine regularly bridges the second and third dimensions with her art; her paintings literally morph off of the page, ranging from enemies that Kirby can fight and defeat to items like1-Ups andMaxim Tomatoes that Kirby can actually use. In terms of dress, Adeleine most frequently dons a large red beret, a green smock with a simple grey skirt under it, and brown shoes with dark blue socks, an appearance that changes in color only when playing the mini-games inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards or recruiting additional Adeleines asDream Friends inKirby Star Allies. Being a young painter girl, Adeleine is not particularly hardy of constitution, preferring to avoid fighting whenever possible. InKirby Star Allies, this is emphasized by the fact that she has the lowesthealth of any playable character, and herguard has her hiding behind her easel with Ribbon.
Like other characters inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Adeleine is not heard speaking, though that does not mean she is not capable of it in-universe. She seems to be peppy and upbeat from what is seen from her, and always seems to be motivated even when times are tough. When Kirby finds her in a stage, she is more than eager to paint somefood for him or help him find aCrystal Shard. Despite her frailties, Adeleine is also quite brave, particularly when paired withRibbon.
Similarities to Ado[edit]
- Main article:Ado#Relation to Adeleine
It has long been speculated that Adeleine is the same character asAdo fromKirby's Dream Land 3. Both are young painter girls who can make living illustrations, and the boss fights against them feature Kirby fighting these drawings before defeating the artists in a single hit. While much has been said regarding the matter, their exact relationship has only been noted in a select few comments fromHAL Laboratory, and even then, they tend to not draw any hard conclusions either way.

Like all of Kirby's eventual partners inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Adeleine is first met onPop Star doing what she does best: painting a landscape. Right before Kirby enters the scene, aCrystal Shard had interrupted her painting session, and likeWaddle Dee before her, she bends down to pick it up, intrigued. Meanwhile, a piece of Dark Matter has invaded her canvas, and while she's distracted, it launches a surprise attack and possesses her; at this point, Kirby runs onto the screen, only to see Adeleine painting up various enemies for him to fight. After Kirby defeats all the paintings, she tries to attack him herself, but to no avail. The Dark Matter is exorcised from her, and Kirby, Waddle Dee, andRibbon are then able to retrieve the Crystal Shard she had been holding. From this point on, Adeleine accompanies the group in finding the remainder of the Crystal Shards hidden across the realm.
Battle[edit]
Phase 1[edit]
During Phase 1, Adeleine paints a multitude of enemies. These are:
- AnN-Z
- ABronto Burt
- AMariel
- AMumbies
- An unidentifiable pixelated object
- TheIce Dragon
- Dark Matter's true form.
Upon defeating Dark Matter, Adeleine enters Phase 2.
Phase 2[edit]
During this phase, Adeleine charges in Kirby's direction while flailing her paintbrush, turning only if she hits a wall. Although she has a full health bar, any attack will finish her off in one hit, including aSlide Attack or anAir Bullet. When defeated, she flies off-screen, leaving behind a Crystal Shard.
- Kirby battles Adeleine's minor painted Bronto Burt and Mariel
- Battle with the Ice Dragon drawing
- Battle with the Dark Matter painting
- Adeleine runs out of paint and other options
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

After 16 years of complete absence, Adeleine makes a cameo appearance inKirby: Planet Robobot as a collectiblesticker.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
| “ | The wait is over! This clever artist and her fairy companion from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards are back on Planet Popstar! They may not be the galaxy's most powerful duo, but their perilous paintings and shiny crystals are nothing to scoff at. | ” | — Adeleine & Ribbon Pause Screen description in Story Mode andThe Ultimate Choice |
| “ | "Back for a new adventure!" The attack artist from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and her pal Ribbon have returned! And with Adeleine's newly improved painting skills, these two are ready to be in the mix! | ” | — Guest Star Adeleine & Ribbon Artful Adventures pause screen description inKirby Star Allies |
Adeleine returns inKirby Star Allies as aDream Friend added as a part of Update 3.0.0 on July 27th, 2018 alongsideDaroach andDark Meta Knight. She is paired up withRibbon asAdeleine & Ribbon, and uses her tohover. Although their moveset is superficially similar to that ofArtist Kirby andVividria, Adeleine & Ribbon boast a large number of unique moves which set them apart. Adeleine is the most skilled painter out of any ally in this game, able to conjure creatures fromKirby's Dream Land 2,Kirby's Dream Land 3 andKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. In addition to smaller creatures likeGhost Knight andBatamon who function similarly to Artist's Painter creatures, she can also conjure larger bosses using the special "Ado's Painter" and then ride upon them in a similar manner to theAnimal Friends. Other abilities include using her flailing attack fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, usingRibbon's Crystal while in the air, and hiding behind her canvas as herGuard technique. Lastly, she can use aFriend Ability calledAl Fresco which is similar toStill Life, but instead of painting the refrigerator ofIce-Spark Kirby, she paints thePicnic from the bonus stages ofKirby 64: The Crystal Shards which generates a lot more items.
The Story Mode pause screen description for Adeleine & Ribbon states that they left Planet Popstar, presumably after the events ofKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and just came back. The Japanese pause screen caption forGuest Star Adeleine & Ribbon Artful Adventures adds to this, saying that they came back from a far-away trip.[2] It is unknown where they went, or why, but this is likely meant to explain their disappearance from the series until this game.
Adeleine hides her face a bit when performingFeed Me; this is evidently because she is shy about being fed.[3]
A couple of theskits in the main menu ofKirby Star Allies have Adeleine either hiding from or trying to attackGooey. Presumably, this is because she is mistaking Gooey forDark Matter, who had possessed her inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
According to the January 2019 issue ofNintendo DREAM, the developers had originally considered giving Adeleine a voice, but ultimately decided against the idea, as they felt "it wasn't the right time for that" and wanted to avoid her feeling like a different character.[4]
Moveset[edit]
Reflecting Adeleine's frailty in her boss fights, Adeleine & Ribbon have the lowesthealth and highest damage knockback of all playable characters inKirby Star Allies. In addition, Adeleine is tall and thus has a bigger hitbox than most characters. However, the paintings produced from Ado's Painter have high mobility and deal massive damage, and Canvas Cover allows the duo to become completely intangible whileguarding. Al Fresco can also be used to generatefood to make up for their low health. As a result, Adeleine & Ribbon are high-risk, high-reward characters.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Adeleine's likeness appears in twoDress-Up Masks. Her regular mask is unlocked by completing card #05 of theStamp Rally, while completing 30missions unlocks a variation based on her focused expression when using the Brush Force move inKirby Star Allies known as "Adeleine (Focused)".
