Szabó received hisBA fromEötvös Loránd University inBudapest,Hungary in 1990, and he received hisPhD fromRutgers University in 1994.
Together withPeter Ozsváth, Szabó createdHeegaard Floer homology, ahomology theory for3-manifolds. For this contribution to the field of topology, Ozsváth and Szabó were awarded the 2007Oswald Veblen Prize in Geometry.[1] In 2010, he was elected honorary member of theHungarian Academy of Sciences.[citation needed]
