Yago Mateus dos Santos (born March 9, 1999), known simply asYago, is a Brazilian professionalbasketball player forCrvena zvezda of the SerbianKLS, theABA League and theEuroLeague. Dos Santos was discovered byPalmeiras, and played forPaulistano from 2016 to 2020 andFlamengo from 2020 to 2022 before moving toGerman clubRatiopharm Ulm. He has also played for theChicago Bulls in the2023 NBA Summer League team. Yago won the 2023German BBL championship with Ulm, while being namedFinals MVP as well.
ESPN andESporte called him one of the greatest revelations of Brazilian basketball of the 2010s.[1][2]
From 2020 to 2022, Yago played two seasons withFlamengo, with whom he won the2022 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, as well as two NBB championships.
On July 20, 2022, Yago signed a two-year contract with German clubRatiopharm Ulm of the GermanBasketball Bundesliga.[3] He was instrumental in helping Ulm win its first ever German championship in 2023 and received Bundesliga Finals MVP honours.[4] Appearing in 45 Bundesliga games (45 starts) during the 2022-23 campaign, he averaged a team-high 15.0 points per contest to go along with 5.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds a game.[5]
On July 17, 2023, Yago signed a three-year contract with Serbian powerhouseKK Crvena zvezda.[6] In the same season, main rivalsKK Partizan also signed BrazilianBruno Caboclo, making the Serbian derby also a derby between two of Brazil's best players. On June 28, 2024, Yago extended his contract with the Serbian club through 2027.[7]
During the2023 FIBA World Cup, he recorded a double-double (24 points, 11 assists, 6-6 from three point range) againstIvory Coast, which earned him worldwide praise.[8]
