Xavier Andrew Rathan-Mayes (born April 29, 1994)[1] is a Canadian professionalbasketball player forReal Madrid of the SpanishLiga ACB and theEuroLeague. He playedcollege basketball for theFlorida State Seminoles.
Born inMarkham, Ontario, he started playing high school basketball at Christian Faith Center Academy inNorth Carolina. However, the NCAA was declining to accept credits received from the school, prompting him to transfer toHuntington Prep School inWest Virginia. At Huntington Prep School, he played with currentNBA playerAndrew Wiggins, and he was considered a top 30 player in his class (2013).[2]
Rathan-Mayes played three years ofcollege basketball for theFlorida State Seminoles between 2014 and 2017.[3]
As a freshman in 2014–15, Rathan-Mayes had three games with 30 points or more.[4][5] He averaged 14.9 points per game, becoming only the second freshman to lead Florida State in scoring. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.[6] He averaged 11.8 points in 2015–16 and 10.6 points in 2016–17. In 2017, he graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Sociology.[7]
After going undrafted in the2017 NBA draft, Rathan-Mayes played for theNew York Knicks in theNBA Summer League and then joined theWestchester Knicks of theNBA G League for the 2017–18 season.[8] On March 5, 2018, he signed a 10-day contract with theMemphis Grizzlies.[9] He played five games for the Grizzlies.[10]
After playing for theLos Angeles Lakers in the2018 NBA Summer League,[11] Rathan-Mayes joinedAEK Athens of theGreek Basket League for the 2018–19 season.[12] His final game for AEK came on December 29, 2018.[13]
On January 8, 2019, he was acquired by theTexas Legends of the NBA G League.[14] In 25 games played for the Legends, he averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
On March 28, 2019, he signed withBnei Herzliya of theIsraeli Premier League for the rest of the season.[15] On April 22, 2019, he recorded a season-high 28 points, shooting 6-of-11 from three-point range, along with five rebounds and three assists in a 76–72 win overIroni Nahariya. He was subsequently namedIsraeli League Round 28 MVP.[16]
In July and August 2019, Rathan-Mayes played with theHamilton Honey Badgers of theCanadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). He helped the team reach the final of the2019 season, scoring 24 points in a loss to theSaskatchewan Rattlers.[13]
In October 2019, Rathan-Mayes re-joined the Texas Legends.[17][18] On December 3, 2019, he was acquired by theAgua Caliente Clippers in a trade.[19]
On February 26, 2021, Rathan-Mayes joinedCSU Sibiu of theRomanian National League.[20]
On October 18, 2021, Rathan-Mayes signed with theIllawarra Hawks in Australia for the2021–22 NBL season.[21]
In May 2022, Rathan-Mayes joined theScarborough Shooting Stars of the CEBL. He played six games between May 26 and June 18.[13]
On August 3, 2022, Rathan-Mayes signed withMelbourne United in Australia for the2022–23 NBL season.[22] In his debut for United on October 2, 2022, he recorded 33 points, nine rebounds, and five assists in a 101–97 overtime win over theNew Zealand Breakers.[23]
On February 9, 2023, he signed withMerkezefendi Bld. Denizli Basket of theTurkish Basketball Super League (BSL).[24]
Rathan-Mayes spent the 2023-2024 campaign with Russian clubBC Enisey, averaging a career-high of 25.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
On July 12, 2024, Rathan-Mayes signed a two-year contract with Spanish powerhouseReal Madrid, moving to theEuroLeague for the first time in his career.
Rathan-Mayes represented his country,Canada, five games in international competition.[25] He participated at the 2012 U-18 Americas Championship and the2013 U-19 World Championship.[26]
Hisstepfather is former NBA playerTharon Mayes.[27]
Rathan-Mayes has an Australian wife who lives inSydney,Australia.[28]
