Wyken Pippin is an oldcultivar of domesticatedapple originating in theNetherlands,[1] or have originated in the garden of theWyken Manor house inEngland from a seedling that was sourcing back to theNetherlands orBelgium,[2] possibly in the early 1700s.[3] It has several other names including 'Alford Prize' and 'Pheasant's Eye'.[4]
It is a small greenish-yellow fruit withlenticels, flattened shape and intense[2] and delicious flavor. Flesh texture is dense. Uses are mainly for fresh eating.[5] It has a lower content ofvitamin C relative to otherapple cultivars.[1] It was one of the top cultivars to be used for home gardening in the 19th century.[5] It is an ancestor ofLaxton's Superb.[1]
