Route 52 is a major north-southarterial route inWinnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It comprises all of Main Street, Queen Elizabeth Way, and St. Mary's Road.[2]
Route 52 begins at the southPerimeter Highway (Manitoba Highway 100) and along St. Mary's Road as the northern continuation ofManitoba Provincial Road 200. It follows the east side of theRed River to theNorwood Bridge, it crosses the river and becomes Queen Elizabeth Way. It continues to theMain Street Bridge over theAssiniboine River, where it entersdowntown and becomes Main Street. After passing through downtown, it runs along the west bank of the Red River to its northern terminus at the Winnipeg city limits, just south of the north Perimeter Highway (Manitoba Highway 101), and becomesManitoba Highway 9.
Route 52 passes through the suburbs ofWest Kildonan, theNorth End,Downtown,Fort Rouge,St. Boniface, andSt. Vital. The section betweenBroadway andSt. Anne's Road is part ofManitoba Highway 1, theTrans-Canada Highway.
Many of Winnipeg's most prominent buildings and institutions are located along Main Street, including City Hall, theCentennial Concert Hall, theManitoba Museum,Union Station, theRichardson Building, and360 Main (formerly the Commodities Exchange tower).
Main Street is one of the oldest routes in the Winnipeg region. It originated as the trail betweenLower Fort Garry and the various settlements huddled aroundthe confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Its intersection with thePortage Trail nearUpper Fort Garry (now downtown Winnipeg) spawned thePortage and Main corner, which is today the heart of the city. Upper Fort Garry was eventually demolished by the city in order to straighten the southern portion of Main Street and realign it to its current configuration. The north gate, the sole surviving piece of Upper Fort Garry, stands near the corner ofBroadway and Main.[3]
St. Mary's Road is named after St. Mary's Parish (Ste. Marie Paroisse in French), aRoman Catholic parish located in the northernmost section of St. Vital.[4] It was originally atrail that led from the parish south to theUnited States border atEmerson along the east side of the Red River. In rural Manitoba, St. Mary's Road is now incorporated intoProvincial Roads 200 and246.
A short section of Main Street was renamed Queen Elizabeth Way to commemorate the2002 Royal Visit ofQueen Elizabeth II to the city.[5]
From south to north.[6]The entire route is inWinnipeg.
