William Mellish (banker)

William Mellish (1764–1838) was an EnglishTory politician and banker.[1]

He was born in theCity of Westminster on 13 June 1764,[2] the third son ofWilliam Mellish of Blyth, Nottinghamshire by his second wife Anne Gore, daughter and co-heiress of John Gore ofBush Hill Park,Enfield, London.[3]

In 1794 Mellish inherited Bush Hill Park from his aunt, Catherine Mellish (née Gore), widow of Joseph Mellish.

With his brother John, he owned the business of John and William Mellish & Co. Having served as a director andDeputy Governor, Mellish was madeGovernor of the Bank of England from 1814 to 1816.

He was electedMember of Parliament (MP) forGreat Grimsby from 1796 to 1802 and from 1803 to 1806, then as MP forMiddlesex from 1806 to 1820.

Mellish died at his residence onBishopsgate Street, London[4] on 8 June 1838, aged 73, and was buried atAll Saints' Church, Edmonton.[5] He never married. After his death, the proceeds of his estates were divided between his nephews and nieces.
