Western Khmer, also known asCardamom Khmer orChanthaburi Khmer, is the dialect of theKhmer language spoken by theKhmer people native to theCardamom Mountains on both sides of the border between westernCambodia (Pailin Province) and easternCentralThailand (Chanthaburi Province). Developing in an historically isolated region, Western Khmer is the only dialect of modern Khmer to conserve theMiddle Khmerphonation contrast ofbreathy voice versusmodal voice that has been all but lost in the other dialects.[1][2]
