Watsonulus is anextinctgenus of prehistoricray-finned fish that lived during theEarly Triassicepoch in what is nowMadagascar.[2][1] It may have also existed in what is nowHimachal Pradesh,India, during theInduanage (Early Triassic).[3] Thetype species, described byJean Piveteau, isWatsonia eugnathoides. Because "Watsonia" waspreoccupied, the new genus nameWatsonulus was later erected. The genus is named afterDavid Meredith Seares Watson.
Watsonulus belongs toParasemionotidae, afamily of earlyneopterygians closely related withhalecomorphs. Other members of Parasemionotidae includeAlbertonia,Candelarialepis,Icarealcyon,Jacobulus,Lehmanotus,Parasemionotus,Qingshania,Stensioenotus,Suius, andThomasinotus.
Similar toAlbertonia (Early Triassic ofCanada) andIcarealcyon, thepectoral fins ofWatsonulus were fairly large.[3]
