TheWatergate is inChester,Cheshire, England and spans the A548 road between Watergate Street and New Crane Street (grid referenceSJ402662). It forms part of thecity walls and carries a footpath over the road. It is recorded in theNational Heritage List for England as a designated Grade Ilisted building.[1]
Watergate was built between 1788 and 1790 forChester City Council and replaced amedieval gate that had been damaged during thesiege of Chester.[2] The architect wasJoseph Turner. It is built in redsandstoneashlar and consists of abasket arch of shortrusticatedvoussoirs. Theparapet consists of stonebalusters interspersed with panels. Adrinking fountain, which is now dry, is fixed to the northabutment and is dated 1857.[1]
