Vivarais (French pronunciation:[vivaʁɛ];Occitan:Vivarés;Latin:Vivariensis provincia[1]) is a traditional region in the south-east ofFrance, covering thedépartement ofArdèche, named after its capitalViviers on the riverRhône. In feudal times part of theHoly Roman Empire with its bishop as count, it became in 1309 one of theCapetian territories as included in theLanguedoc province of the French realm, and continued to be aFrench province until 1789.

In 1999, a wine region,Côtes du Vivarais AOC, was established nearCôtes du Rhône in several communes of the south ofdépartement Ardèche and a few in northernGard.
