Early and personal life

[edit]

Erin Vemby Anna Doyle[1] was born inChatham, Kent.[2]She hasADHD,[3] which allows her tohyperfocus on writing songs;[4] she also suffers fromdepression[5] anddyslexia, the latter of which meant she was unable to read properly until she was eighteen,[6] and would keep aVoice Notes diary of how she felt day to day.[7] Before releasing music, she worked in a pub, a call centre and as a personal trainer.[6]

Career

[edit]

In 2020, Doyle released a number of laptop recordings under a pseudonym.[8] In March 2022, Doyle released a video on toTikTok of a then-unfinished "Low Down" featuring Dan Fable; Doyle wrote the song after rediscovering a retirediPhone 4, and hearing how low she was.[6] At the time she released the video, she had written most of her verse and the chorus, but neither had recorded their verses, meaning that the pair had to rush to record it.[7] When self-released[9] as "Low Down" on 15 April 2022,[10] the song peaked at number 59 on theUK Singles Chart;[11] the song would later be re-released bySony Music as "low down" on 23 May 2022.[12]

On 23 September 2022, Doyle released "Messy in Heaven", which included "Low Down".[1] She wrote the song at 3am on her guitar,[4] and after a dream in whichJesus walked down her local high street while drunk;[13] and intended the song as an "anti-drug anthem", following a friend being afflicted bydrug addiction.[6] The song charted at number 3 on theUK Singles Chart, and spent fifteen weeks at No. 1 on theUK Dance Singles Chart.[14] On 16 March 2023, she released "Gutter",[15] and was written about her own struggles.[16] The song charted at number 95 on the UK Singles Chart.[11] On 20 May 2023, Doyle performed "Gutter" onLater... with Jools Holland.[17] On 20 June 2023, she released "Die Young" withRudimental,[18] which charted at number 73 on the UK Singles Chart and at number 26 on the UK Dance Chart.[11]

Artistry

[edit]

Doyle was inspired to take up guitar and piano after seeing her grandfather play. When asked byClash Magazine in March 2023 what her influences were, she replied that the first album she bought was byJustin Bieber, and that she grew up listening toCarole King,Stevie Nicks,The Carpenters,Rihanna andAdele.[7] She,piri,Issey Cross,Charlotte Plank, andWillow Kayne are members ofLoud LDN, a collective of female andnon-binary musicians based inLondon and its suburbs.[19]
