Varanasi district is adistrict in the Indianstate ofUttar Pradesh, with the holy city ofVaranasi as the district headquarters. It is also the headquarters of theVaranasi division which contains 4 districts (including Varanasi).
It is surrounded byMirzapur district,Jaunpur district,Ghazipur district,Chandauli district, andBhadohi district. TheGanga (Ganges) river flows through the district. Part of theVaranasi division, the district occupies an area of 1,535 square kilometres (593 sq mi) and as of the 2011[update] Census of India, it had a population of 3,676,841.

According to the2011 census, Varanasi district has apopulation of 3,676,841,[1] This gives it a ranking of 75th in India (out of a total of640).[1] The district has a population density of 2,399 inhabitants per square kilometre (6,210/sq mi).[1] Itspopulation growth rate over the decade 2001–2011 was 17.32%.[1] Varanasi has asex ratio of 909females for every 1000 males,[1] and aliteracy rate of 77.05%. 43.44% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 13.24% and 0.78% of the population respectively.[1]
At the time of the2011 Census of India, 76.19% of the population spokeHindi, 19.68%Bhojpuri, and 3.24%Urdu as their first language.[5] Bhojpuri is natively spoken Varanasi.[6]
The district is made up of threetehsils:Varanasi,Pindra andRajatalab.[7] All 3 are headed by a SDM.
These 3 tehsils are divided into 8Blocks: Arajiline, Baragaon, Chiraigaon, Cholapur, Harhua, Kashividyapeeth, Pindra and Sewapuri.
There are eightVidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituencies:Pindra,Shivpur,Rohaniya,Varanasi North,Varanasi South,Varanasi Cantt.,Sevapuri, andAjagara.
