Trabea (pl.:trabeae) is the name of various pieces ofRoman clothing. A distinct feature of alltrabeae was their color – usually red orpurple. They were formed like atoga and possibly in some cases like amantle and worn by more distinguished members of Roman society.
A garment known as thetrabea triumphalis was commonly worn byconsuls inlate antiquity. When EmperorJustinian I abolished the office of consul as a separate entity from the Emperor himself, thetrabea triumphalis developed into theloros, which was the worn only by the imperial family and senior administrative officials. Although EmperorLeo VI abolished the ancient title of consul altogether, theloros persisted until theend of the empire as the formal, ceremonialdress of the emperors.
