Thomandersia is the solegenus in theThomandersiaceae, anAfrican family offlowering plants.Thomandersia is a genus ofshrubs and smalltrees, with six species native toCentral andWest Africa.[3]
Thomandersia traditionally has been classified within the familyAcanthaceae based onmorphology by several authors, includingAPG I 1998,APG II 2003, and inSchlegeliaceae at APG Website Missouri Botanical Garden, in a list of genera of this family, but Stevens argues further that should be considered out of this taxon by weak support and regarded Thomandersiaceae.[4]
The genus was elevated to family status, previously by Sreemadhavan 1976[5] and 1977[6] on the basis ofleaf anatomy andanther morphology, and more recently by Wortleyet al. 2005[7] and 2007,[8] based on phylogenetic analyses of genetic material.
The genus was described with this name in 1892 by French botanistHenri Ernest Baillon.[9][1]
The genus includes the following species:[3]
