The Long Lane (Derbyshire)

Roman road in Derbyshire, England

The Long Lane is the medieval and modern name of the Roman road that ran almost due westwards fromDerventio, the Roman fort andvicus in the suburbs of modernDerby, throughDerbyshire toRocester (where there was a Roman settlement) andDraycott in the Moors. From that point onwards the same road – no longer called "The Long Lane" – continued throughStaffordshire toChesterton nearNewcastle-under-Lyme. Its destination wasMiddlewich (LatinSalinae), from which the important city ofChester (LatinDeva) was in easy reach.
