The Fifth Risk is a 2018 non-fiction book byMichael Lewis that examines thetransition andpolitical appointments of thefirst Donald Trump presidency, especially with respect to three government agencies: theDepartment of Energy, theDepartment of Agriculture, and theDepartment of Commerce.[1][2][3][4][5] The "fifth risk" is poor management which eventually results in a dramatic negative outcome.[6]
The book spent fourteen weeks onThe New York Times non-fictionbest-seller list.[7] A lengthy excerpt from the book was published twice byThe Guardian, using a quote from a top adviser to Trump in the title.[8]
Barack andMichelle Obama acquired the rights to the book for aNetflix series about theU.S. government.[9] The 2022 American documentary comedy seriesThe G Word with Adam Conover is "loosely inspired" by the book.[10]
John MacWilliams, arisk management expert at theUnited States Department of Energy from theObama Administration, gave Lewis the top five risks he saw for the department:broken arrows (loose nuclear weapons and nuclear accidents),North Korean nuclear weapons, an end to theIran nuclear deal, protecting theelectrical grid fromcyberterrorism, and internal project management. It is this fifth risk that inspired the title of the book.[2]
