Thawar Chand Gehlot (born 18 May 1948) is an Indianpolitician who is the current and 13thGovernor of Karnataka, being the first person serving as theGovernor of Karnataka fromMadhya Pradesh.[3][4] He assumed office of the Governor of Karnataka on 11 July 2021.[5] He also served as theMinister of Social Justice and Empowerment in theGovernment of India from 2014 to 2021. He was also theLeader of the House in the upper house of Indian Parliament. He was a member of the Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee of the BJP.[6]

Early life

Gehlot was born in aDalit family in the village of Rupeta inNagda in theCentral India Agency of theDominion of India, which is in present-dayMadhya Pradesh,India. He is a senior member ofBharatiya Janata Party. He had assumed ministerial berth a number of times in the union government.[7]

He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree fromVikram University,Ujjain,Madhya Pradesh.[8]

Career

He was a member of theRajya Sabha,upper house ofIndian Parliament representing the state ofMadhya Pradesh. He was awarded anhonorary doctorate by theDr. B.R. Ambedkar University of Social Sciences.[9] He formerly representedShajapur in the lower house of Indian Parliament,Lok Sabha from 1996 to 2009.[10] He served as the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, in Modi's 2nd cabinet. He is a member of theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was also the general secretary of the party.[11]

On 6 July 2021, Thawar Chand Gehlot was appointed the 13thGovernor of Karnataka.
