Tessenberg (French:Montagne de Diesse orPlateau de Diesse) is an elevated plateau inSwitzerland. It is located aboveLake Biel, on the southern slopes ofChasseral, at an elevation of about 800 m. It is divided between the Swiss cantons ofBern andNeuchâtel, and three municipalities,Nods,Lignières andPlateau de Diesse.
The plateau is drained byTwannbach to the east and byRuisseau de Vaux to the south-west, both emptying into Lake Biel, and as such part of theAare basin.
It can be reached by afunicular, theVinifuni Ligerz–Prêles, fromLigerz railway station.
The area was part of the dominion of theCounts of Neuchâtel from the 12th century. It was later administered jointly by the counts of Neuchâtel and thePrince-bishopric of Basel andBern. Tessenberg was occupied byFrench troops in December 1797 and partly adjoined to the Frenchdépartement Mont-Terrible.The territory was returned to Switzerland, as part of thecanton of Bern (Erlach District, after 1846La Neuveville District), following theCongress of Vienna of 1815.
