Terrence Richard Ley (born February 21, 1947) is an American formerbaseballpitcher who began his career in the1971 season for theNew York Yankees. He was a student ofUniversity of Oregon before he was drafted in the 3rd round of the January 1967 draft and was 24 when he made his major league debut on August 20, 1971, for the Yankees. He played in 6 major league games.
Ley attendedMadison High School inPortland, Oregon.[1] He was initially drafted by theDetroit Tigers in the 30th round of the1965 Major League Baseball draft, but chose not to sign. He attended theUniversity of Oregon, where he playedcollege baseball for theOregon Ducks baseball team. After his freshman year, he transferred to Clark College inVancouver, Washington.[1]
TheNew York Yankees drafted Ley in the third round of the January Secondary draft in 1967, and he signed.[1] He made hisMajor League Baseball debut in 1971. Both he andGary Jones were traded twice on the same day at theWinter Meetings on December 2, 1971. They were first sent from the Yankees to theTexas Rangers forBernie Allen, then along withDel Unser andDenny Riddleberger to theCleveland Indians forRoy Foster,Rich Hand,Mike Paul andKen Suarez.[2]
Ley finished his career playing in Japan, playing for theNippon-Ham Fighters ofNippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in1974 and1975. Ley was the first pitcher in NPB history to issue threebalks in an inning, doing so in 1974.
