Tchintabaraden (var.Tchin-Tabaraden,Tchin Tabaraden) is a town andcommune located in theAzawagh area ofNiger, in the north of theTahoua Region. It is the capital of the region'sTchintabaraden Department. It is the market center for theIwellemmedanTuareg. The first insurrectionist movement for the autonomy ofTenere, the Tuareg region in central-north and western Niger, began here and in nearbyAbalagh in 1985. In the neighboring oasis ofIn-Gall, theCure Salee, or "the festival of the nomads", is held annually.
The name means "valley of the young girls".[1] It was so named due to the former practice of all of the young women and girls going to the large well in town to draw water daily. With running water, this is no longer a needed ritual.[citation needed]
As of 2012, it had a population of 79,889.[2]
