Taukum (Kazakh:Тауқұм) is adesert in theAlmaty Region,Kazakhstan.[1][2]
Taukum is a sandy desert that is located in the southwestern part of theBalkhash-Alakol Basin. It extends to the south of the lower course of theIli River, from the southern end ofLake Balkhash to theBozoi Plateau. TheMaizharylgan, part of theChu-Ili Range rises to the west, and theZhusandala Plain stretches to the south of the desert. LakeItishpes lies at the northwestern end. The height of the sand dunes is between 10 meters (33 ft) and 15 meters (49 ft).[3]
The vegetation between sandy areas is made up of shrubs and grasses typical of arid zones, includingsagebrush,saltwort,dzhuzgun,wormwood,saxaul andwheatgrass. There is a narrow stretch ofriparian forest by the banks of the Ili river, at the northern limit of the desert.[3][4]
