Tarlee is a town inSouth Australia. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it is thought to be a corruption of the nameTralee inIreland. The township of Tarlee was advertised as readied for sale by auction in 1867.[2] Tarlee is in the lowerMid North region whereHorrocks Highway crosses theGilbert River. It is approximately 8 km south ofGiles Corner, where theBarrier Highway toBroken Hill diverges from the Horrocks Highway through theClare Valley. At the2016 census, Tarlee had a population of 302.
Tarlee was on thePeterborough railway line betweenRoseworthy junction andBurra. For a short period, Forrester's near Tarlee was the terminus as construction was authorised in two stages in the late 1860s.[3][4]
The railway through Tarlee was closed in the 2000s.
The Tarlee institute building was opened in 1888.[5]
Tarlee is in theDistrict Council of Clare and Gilbert Valleyslocal government area, theSouth Australian House of Assemblyelectoral district of Frome and theAustralian House of RepresentativesDivision of Grey.
