The article on the french version of Wikipedia has additional details (early life, etc.):[1]
on Nov 14 2006 I removed the material citing Irish American parentage (cf Pleiade edition of Complete works vol I p li), see also IW Brock in French Review XXIII(1950) p 347). added material on Green's war service. added material on Julian Hartridge (b&d + serv in US House of reps.
His sisterAnne Green (1891-1975?) wrote the memoirWith Much Love and tons of novels (in English).--Radh (talk)20:27, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have not incorporated the reference from the Georgia Historical Society, and may not do so, but its a good source for someone else to work with.Mercurywoodrose (talk)08:05, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The lack of a citation was also present in the French article at fr.wikipedia.org
The Sorbonne article states that as a writer, his 1926 novel met with an enthusiastic response from Bernanos
L’écrivain Son premier roman, Mont-Cinère (1926), est salué avec enthousiasme par Bernanos.
but the fr.wikipedia article on Ge Bernanos states that he first made his mark in 1926 !
The electronic edition of Ency. Universalis (in French) has 2 articles on "Julien Green" : one is general, one is on a novel and Green is discussed in the article "Mystique".
The general article begins with the 1926 encouraging words of Bernanos ! ( that e-resource is copyright with no copying for citation permitted by the on-line reader.)
It is remarkable that in 1972, he was the first foreigner to enter the French Academy (replacing Fr. Mauriac, itself no small thing and an indication of his stature as a writer with Roman Catholic faith and sensibility.) Green's university education was in the USA, so his achievements as a French writer is astonishing and should not be ignored even by straight, non-Catholics such as myself.
I have read Green in French chiefly as a foil to Gide.
I am still looking for a reference as to the first use of "Julien" in print : he remains "Julian" in many English articles. Having remained an American citizen, there is little doubt that his legal name remained "Julian Hartridge Green". There is no question that in France he is remembered as simply "Julien Green".
The Universalis article has what appears to be a useful bibliography.
There is an informative web page athttp://andrebourgeois.fr/GreenJulien.htm but I am concerned about the copyright : it purports to be the work of Henri de Régnier (Académie Française) and the web page has no copyright or resource info. Perhaps we can find that de Régnier essay in English?
Here is the French Academy web page for Julien Green
http://www.academie-francaise.fr/immortels/base/academiciens/fiche.asp?param=641
in French. That page confirms that he replaced the late Mauriac.
The youtube pirate of Pivot opens with -- the 1926 quote of Bernanos' encouragment to Green ! If Bernard Pivot started his progamme with it, we will not have gone too far off-base in doing the same in this article.

We should really have a link to la Bibliothèque de la Pléiade 8 volumes 1972-1998 as this was considered remarkable for a living writer who was not "French", but rather an "Écrivain américain d'expression française" as he is styled by Larousse at their
