There is debate in the MoS. Some are of the camp that species common names should be upper cased as proper nouns, while others are of the opposite camp, such as yourself. Some of the Tree of Life WikiProjects explicitly call for their species to be treated as proper nouns (such asWP:BIRD andWP:PRIM) while none as far as I can see explicitly call for them to be treated as common nouns. For a while, I had been working on the Carnivora articles, and adjusted them to proper nouns.
