InMāori tradition,Tūwhenua was one of the greatocean-going, voyaging canoes (orwaka) that were used in the migrations that settledNew Zealand. The waka is linked toBay of Plentyiwi. Some Māori from Ngatiira, ofŌpōtiki, state thatTamatea came fromHawaiki inTūwhenua, and that he found a tribe of aborigines living at Motu on his arrival.[1]
