The names of Suomenniemi and the nearby lakeSuomijärvi refer to 13th century settlers fromFinland Proper, who were known assuomalaiset while their homeland was calledSuomi. Nowadays the Finns proper are known asvarsinaissuomalaiset, as the termsuomalaiset was extended to all Finnic groups of the Swedish realm.

The village was first mentioned in 1544 asSomenemiby as a part of theLappee parish. In 1571 it became a part of the newly foundedTaipalsaari parish, whileSavitaipale was split off from Taipalsaari in 1639 and Suomenniemi was transferred to it. Suomenniemi became a chapel community in 1689 and a separate parish and municipality in 1866.[4]

In 2013, Suomenniemi was consolidated withMikkeli.
