Sujoy Ghosh (born 21 May 1966)[1] is an Indian film director, actor, producer, and screenwriter who works inHindi films.[2][3] He has directedJhankaar Beats (2003),Home Delivery: Aapko... Ghar Tak (2005),Aladin (2009),Kahaani (2012),Kahaani 2 (2016)[4][5] andBadla (2019). He has also written and directed short films such asAhalya (2015) andAnukul (2017).[6] He had directed two projects forNetflix, the horror drama seriesTypewriter (2019) and the mystery thriller filmJaane Jaan (2023).[7]

Early life

Sujoy Ghosh was born inKolkata. He studied inSt. James' School. He used to stay inBhowanipore and then moved to London when he was 13. Sujoy attendedQueen Elizabeth Sixth Form College where he completed hisA Levels. He has a degree in engineering and an MBA fromManchester University.[8] He worked as a South Asia head of the media division ofReuters before quitting in 1999.[8] Sujoy is married to Vaishali, a psychologist and business owner. They have two children.[citation needed]

Career

Ghosh made his directorial debut in 2003 with the low-budgetJhankaar Beats which was a tribute toR. D. Burman, and which went on to become a surprise hit. His next venturesHome Delivery andAladin did not achieve box office success. His 2012 directorial,Kahaani, featuringVidya Balan in the lead role, gained both widespread critical acclaim and commercial success.[9][10] In 2016, his filmKahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh was released which is a standalone sequel toKahaani. He started his acting career portraying the role of Bengali sleuthByomkesh Bakshi in a film directed byRituparno Ghosh in December 2012.[11] Not many know that he has written the tagline "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re" for theIPL TeamKolkata Knight Riders. He has also directed, produced and written short films likeAhalya (2015) andAnukul (2017).[12]
