TheStop the War Committee was ananti-war organisation thatopposed theSecond Boer War. It was formed byWilliam Thomas Stead in 1899.[1] Its president wasJohn Clifford[2] and prominent members includedLloyd George andKeir Hardie. The group was generally seen as pro-Boer.[3]
Against the background of political campaigning for thekhaki election of1900, Stop-The-War distributed millions of posters, cartoons and broadsheets, handing out leaflets tocommuters on trains.[3]
Its resolutions were religiously-inspired and utopian in their approach. The Committee united variousNonconformists who held different views in relation tosocialism. However, the high moral tone of its pronouncements failed to achieve support from the working class, and provoked stronger antagonism than the more rational approach of theSouth African Conciliation Committee.[4]
