Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert is a formerAmerican footballquarterback for theLiberty Flames.

Early years

Calvert's middle name is "Buckshot," after his father's favoriteNASCAR driver,Buckshot Jones.[1][2][3] Calvert attendedMiami Carol City Senior High School inMiami Gardens, Florida, where he playedhigh school football.[4][5] Calvert received scholarship offers to playcollege football forSouth Florida,Florida International andLiberty.[6] He committed to play college football for coachTurner Gill atLiberty University.[6]

College career

Calvert entered the2016 season as the backup quarterback to Stephon Masha,[7][8][9] but earned the starting job four games into the season and led the team to a 5–2 record over the final seven games of the season.[10][11][12] On opening day of the2017 season, Calvert led the Flames to their biggest win in school history; a 48–45 triumph overBaylor inWaco that marked Liberty's first ever win over aPower Five conference team.[13][14][15] In2018, Calvert led the Flames to a 6–6 record in their first season as a member of theNCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. During Calvert's senior season in2019,[16][17] he led the Flames to an 8–5 record and an appearance in the2019 Cure Bowl, the first bowl appearance in school history.[18][19] Calvert ended his college career at the Cure Bowl by leading Liberty to a 23–16 win overGeorgia Southern, securing Liberty's first bowl win in their first bowl appearance.[20][21]
