Stenosteus is anextinctmonospecificgenus of medium-sizedselenosteidarthrodireplacoderms of theLate Devonian period known from the UpperFamennianCleveland Shale ofOhio. Estimated skull lengths range from 6 to 9 centimeters[1] Most fossils ofStenosteus have been scraps of armor and portions of tooth-plates suggestive ofSelenosteus. In 1996, enough material of a new species,S. angustopectus, was recovered to allow a reconstruction of armor that resembles that ofSelenosteus.[2]
Stenosteus is a member of thefamilySelenosteidae of thecladeAspinothoracidi, which belongs to the cladePachyosteomorphi, one of the two major clades withinEubrachythoraci. Thecladogram below shows thephylogeny ofStenosteus:[3]
