Vrtanes also knownSaint Vrtanes (Armenian:Սբ.Վրթանէս Ա. Պարթև) was the 14thCatholicos-Patriarch of theArmenian Apostolic Church serving from 333 until his death in 341. He was the son ofJulitta (or Mariam) of Armenia andGregory the Illuminator.
In 333, Vrtanes succeededAristaces as third in line in the then-hereditaryGregorid line of theCatholicos of theArmenian Catholic Church. Vrtanes was the first son born toSt. Gregory I the Illuminator by his wife Miriam and his younger brother wasSt. Aristaces I. He was the father ofSt. Husik I andGrigoris.
He died on 341 in which he was replaced by his eldest son,St. Husik I, as the nextCatholicos-Patriarch.
