ThedolphingenusSotalia is considered to have two memberspecies with the classification ofSotalia guianensis[3][4] as a distinct species fromSotalia fluviatilis[5][6] in 2007. This was a result of recent morphometric analyses, as well asmitochondrial DNA analysis.[7]
Members of this genus are found in theAtlantic andCaribbean coasts ofCentral andSouth America as well as in theAmazon River and most of itstributaries.[4]
