Solid earth refers to "theearth beneath our feet" orterra firma, the planet's solid surface and its interior.[1]: v [2]: 1  It excludes the Earth's fluid envelopes, theatmosphere andhydrosphere (but includes theocean basin), as well as thebiosphere andinteractions with theSun.

Solid-earth science refers to the corresponding methods of study, a subset ofEarth sciences, predominantlygeophysics andgeology, excludingaeronomy,atmospheric sciences,oceanography,hydrology, andecology.
