Skilling Island is a smallisland immediately north ofAtriceps Island, in theRobertson Islands group of theSouth Orkney Islands ofAntarctica. Although roughly charted at a much earlier date, the island was first surveyed in 1933 byDI personnel. It was named by theUnited Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Charles J. Skilling (1931–52) of theFalkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), general assistant atSigny Island in 1949, and member of the sledge party which visited the Robertson Islands the same year. Skilling died aboard theJohn Biscoe on 17 April 1952.
The island is part of the Robertson Islands NorthImportant Bird Area (IBA), identified as such byBirdLife International because it supports substantialbreeding colonies ofchinstrap penguins.[1]
