Simon Kelner (born 9 December 1957) is a British journalist and newspaper editor.
Kelner studied atBury Grammar School.[1] His older brother is the journalist and broadcasterMartin Kelner. He is Jewish.[2][3] He started work atNeath Guardian in 1976. In 1980 he moved on to theKent Evening Post. He became assistant sports editor ofThe Observer in 1983. He became deputy sports editor ofThe Independent in 1986. In 1989 he worked on theObserver magazine and then becameDaily Mail magazine editor.[4]
Kelner was editor-in-chief ofThe Independent andIndependent on Sunday newspapers from May 1998 to 2008, succeedingAndrew Marr andRosie Boycott. After a stint as Managing Director ofThe Independent titles he was re-appointed editor in April 2010 by the new owner,Alexander Lebedev. Kelner won several awards during his employment atThe Independent, including Editor of the Year in 2004 and 2010.[5]
