Shougang Group Co., Ltd., formerlyShougang Corporation is aChinese state-owned steel company. Based inBeijing, itsShijingshan district operations were moved out of the city prior to it hosting the2008 Summer Olympics due to concerns over pollution.[1][2]
Its subsidiary and listed company,Beijing Shougang Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000959), was established in 1999 and listed on theShenzhen Stock Exchange in 2005. It also has 3 other subsidiaries listed on theStock Exchange of China Hong Kong,Shougang Concord International (SEHK: 697),Shougang Concord Century (SEHK: 103), andShougang Concord Grand (SEHK: 730).[3]
The word "Shougang" (Chinese:首钢) is an abbreviation of its Chinese name (Chinese:首都钢铁公司;pinyin:Shǒudūgāngtiě gōngsī;lit. 'Capital Steel and Iron Corporation'), meaning "Capital Steel".[4]: 49 Some publications also useCapital Iron and Steel Corporation as the translation of the name.[5]

The predecessor of Shougang,Shijingshan Steel Plant, was founded in 1919 inShijingshan District,[6] with accelerated growth since the founding of People's Republic of China in 1949. It was renamed Shougang in 1967.[7]Shougang focuses its business mainly on steel industry, the corporation also runs on mining, machinery and equipment development, electronics, building, real estate, and related services, in addition, they also developed business with overseas companies in order to form Shougang as a leading multi-diverse corporation.
The steel mill was one of the largest sources of pollution in Beijing, and discussions to relocate it began in 2004 and continued off and on thereafter.[4]: 49 The mill was relocated toCaofeidian District inTangshan over the period 2005 to 2010,[4]: 49 with the old site in Beijing being turned intoShougang Park.[8] The park was planned byArup Group, and uses sustainable construction andsponge city design concepts.[9]: 51 Big Air Shougang, one of the venues of2022 Winter Olympics, was built inside the former factory in 2019.[10] The venue has become a simple of China'surban renewal.[11]: 166 Railway stationXinshougang (Shougang Park) opened on December 31, 2021.[12]
Shougang Park also serves as one of the two venues of theChina International Fair for Trade in Services, the annual trade fair in Beijing every September.
The company has current operations in the pacific coast of SouthernPeru and is known as Shougang Hierro Perú. It operates theMarcona Mine in theMarcona District, anopen-pit iron mine acquired in 1992. There have been continuing labor troubles.[13][14]
