Shelford railway station is on theWest Anglia Main Line serving the villages ofGreat Shelford,Little Shelford andStapleford inCambridgeshire, England. It is 52 miles 36 chains (84.4 km) down the line fromLondon Liverpool Street and is situated betweenWhittlesford Parkway andCambridge. Its three-letter station code is SED.
The station and all trains calling are operated byGreater Anglia.
The station was opened by theEastern Counties Railway in 1845[1] and later became a junction with the opening of theStour Valley Railway fromHaverhill on 1 June 1865.[2] The subsequent completion of the line onwards toSudbury a few months later created a through link withColchester on theGreat Eastern Main Line. This was used by through holiday trains betweenClacton-on-Sea and theMidlands inLNER andBritish Rail days but then fell victim to theBeeching Axe, closing to all traffic on 6 March 1967.[3] However, the line between Sudbury andMarks Tey is still in use today.
Eminent theatre directorSir Peter Hall lived here in his early life when his father Reginald Hall was the stationmaster.[4][5][6]
