Shan Masood Khan (Urdu: شان مسعود; born 14 October 1989), also spelled asShaan Masood, is a Pakistani international cricketer. He is the current captain of the Pakistan Test cricket team. He is a left-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm medium-fast bowler.
In August 2018, he was one of thirty-three players to be awarded a central contract for the 2018–19 season by thePakistan Cricket Board (PCB).[2][3] He has also served as the captain ofKarachi Kings,Multan Sultans,Southern Punjab Cricket Team andYorkshire County Cricket Club.
On 15 November 2023, Masood was appointed as a captain ofPakistan national cricket team in the Test format.[4]
Shan Masood was born in 1989 in Kuwait, where his father worked in a bank. Following theIraqi invasion of Kuwait and the start of the Gulf War, the family left for their native Pakistan, settling down inKarachi again.[5]
His father Mansoor Masood Khan, apart from being a professional banker, always had an interest in sports, himself playing hockey at provincial level while loving cricket as well and encouraging his son to be invested in the field.[6] Mansoor became a member of the governing board in thePakistan Cricket Board in 2014.[7]
His paternal uncle,Waqar Masood Khan, is a retired civil servant who served as Pakistan's longest serving Federal Secretary for Finance. His elder sister died in 2021 while his younger brother Ali is a barrister.[8]
After moving to the United Kingdom with his parents, he studied atStamford School,Lincolnshire and thenDurham University where he studied economics.[9] He studied Management and Sports Sciences atLoughborough University through adistance learning programme.[9][10]
In his first-class debut in the2007–08 season ofQuaid-e-Azam Trophy, Masood scored 54 forKarachi Whites againstHyderabad as part of a 154-run opening stand withAsad Shafiq.[11]
He also played three first-class games forDurham University.
In April 2018, he was named the vice-captain ofKhyber Pakhtunkhwa's squad for the2018 Pakistan Cup.[12][13]
In September 2019, Masood was named as the captain ofSouthern Punjab for the2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament.[14][15]
He is captain ofBagh Stallions in theKashmir Premier League.
In December 2021, he was signed byDerbyshire for the 2022 county season.[16] In April 2022, in the second round of matches in the2022 County Championship, Shan scored his maiden double century in first-class cricket, scoring an unbeaten 201 runs on the opening day againstSussex.[17] In the following match, Shan scored another double century, becoming the first batsman for Derbyshire to score back-to-back double centuries in first-class cricket.[18] In May 2022, he scored his third century for Derbyshire against Worcestershire.[19]
Masood was appointed captain of theYorkshire County Cricket Club for the 2023 County season.[20]
In October 2013, Masood made his Test debut in the first testagainst South Africa scoring 75 runs, at theSheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. He became only the third Pakistan batsman to score a half-century and a duck on Test debut.[21]
In July 2015, he scored his maiden centuryagainst Sri Lanka atPallekele, putting on 242 for the third wicket withYounis Khan as Pakistan scored 382 to complete their highest successful chase.[22] Masood, a part-time medium pacer, bowled for the first time in Test cricket on 23 July 2016 against England at Old Trafford. His first delivery was ano ball.[23]
In September 2018, he was named in Pakistan'sOne Day International (ODI) squad for the2018 Asia Cup, but he did not play.[24] In January 2019, he was named in Pakistan's ODI squad for their seriesagainst South Africa, but again he did not play.[25] In March 2019, he was named in Pakistan's ODI squad for their seriesagainst Australia.[26][27] He made his ODI debut for Pakistan againstAustralia on 22 March 2019.[28]
In December 2019, he scored his second Test century, against thetouring Sri Lankans at theNational Stadium, Karachi.[29] In the same match, he also scored his 1,000th run in Test cricket.[30]
In February 2020, Masood made his third Test century,against Bangladesh atRawalpindi.[31]
In June 2020, he was named in a 29-man squad for Pakistan'stour to England during theCOVID-19 pandemic.[32][33] In July, he was shortlisted in Pakistan's 20-man squad for the Test matches against England.[34][35] In August 2020, Masood scored 156 in the first Test against England, his fourth century in Test cricket, at theOld Trafford.[36]
In November 2020, he was named in Pakistan's 35-man squad for theirtour to New Zealand.[37]
In September 2022, he was named in the Pakistan's T20I squad for theseries against England.[38] He made his T20I debut on 20 September 2022, againstEngland.[39] Masood was also named as part of thePakistan squad for the2022 T20 World Cup.[40]
In January 2023, he was named as the vice-captain of the Pakistan's ODI team for theirhome series against New Zealand.[41]
In November 2023, he was named as thecaptain of thePakistan national cricket team in thetest format.[42]
Under his captaincy, Pakistan lost the three-match testseries against Australia by 3-0[43] where he scored a total of 181 runs.[44]
Masood was retained as Pakistan's captain for the two-matchTest series against Bangladesh[45] that ended in a 2-0 home series loss inRawalpindi.[46]
Masood was again retained as Pakistan's captain for the three-testhome series against England.[47] In the first Test, Masood scored his fifth test century and surpassed the 2,000 runs milestone in Tests.[48] He also became the 17th Pakistan captain to score a hundred in the test format.[49] In the second test, Pakistan's win marked Masood's first victory since taking over as captain, after six consecutive defeats in a row.[50] Pakistan won the third Test in Rawalpindi for a 2-1 series win.[51]
His next assignment as Pakistan's Test captain was a two-matchaway series against South Africa. In the first Test, he got a couple of starts but was unable to convert them into a big score, as Pakistan lost a nail-biter by two wickets.[52] In the second Test, after being dismissed for a low score in the first innings, he scored his sixth Test century in the second innings.[53] Despite his hundred, Pakistan went on to lose the match and the series 2-0.[54]
Mansoor has played hockey at provincial level and has seen ups and downs in cricket. He has witnessed Pakistan playing best and worst cricket.
Things went bad to worse for Masood when his father became a member of the governing board in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2014. The label of nepotism seemed to follow him everywhere.
The left-handed batter is the son of renowned banker Mansoor Masood Khan, while his paternal uncle Waqar Masood Khan has served as federal finance secretary. He is the second among his three siblings. Shan's elder sister passed away last year and his younger brother, Ali, is a barrister.
