TheSeman is a major river in westernAlbania. It is formed by the confluence of the riversDevoll andOsum, a few km west ofKuçovë. It is 85 km (53 mi) long (281 km (175 mi) with its longest source river Devoll) and itsdrainage basin is 5,649 km2 (2,181 sq mi). Its average discharge is 95.7 m3/s (3,380 cu ft/s).[2] It meanders generally westwards through a flat lowland. NearFier, the Seman receives theGjanica from the left. It flows into theAdriatic Sea at the southern margin of theDivjakë-Karavasta National Park.
Inclassical antiquity, the Seman River was known as theApsus, which is a derivative of theIndo-European root*ăp- "water, river". TheIllyrian hydronymApsus, corresponds toApsias, a river name in southern Italy brought by Illyrian migrations (Iapygians) in the region.[3]
