David Cameron formed thesecond Cameron ministry, the firstConservativemajority government since 1996,[1] following the2015 general election. Prior to the election Cameron had led his first ministry, theCameron–Clegg coalition, acoalition government that consisted of members of the Conservatives and theLiberal Democrats, with Liberal Democrat leaderNick Clegg asdeputy prime minister.

Following thevote to leave at theEU referendum on the morning of 24 June, Cameron said that he would resign as prime minister after a newLeader of the Conservative Party was chosen after the party conference in the autumn. It was announced on 11 July 2016 that he would resign on 13 July and be succeeded byHome Secretary,Theresa May.[2]

Cameron announced his choice forChancellor of the Exchequer,Home Secretary,Foreign Secretary andDefence Secretary on the afternoon of 8 May 2015, withGeorge Osborne,Theresa May,Philip Hammond andMichael Fallon retaining their posts. Osborne was also given thehonorific title ofFirst Secretary of State, which had been held byWilliam Hague in the preceding ministry.[3][4]

Cameron's choices for other ministers were announced through the week.[5][6]Eric Pickles, previously theCommunities Secretary left theCabinet and received a knighthood, being replaced byGreg Clark.Michael Gove moved to the position ofJustice Secretary, replacingChris Grayling, who became the newLeader of the House of Commons.

Several vacant Cabinet posts previously held by Liberal Democrats were subsequently filled by Conservative ministers – the positions ofBusiness Secretary,Energy Secretary,Scottish Secretary andChief Secretary to the Treasury were given toSajid Javid,Amber Rudd,David Mundell andGreg Hands respectively, withJohn Whittingdale replacing Javid asCulture Secretary.

Mark Harper replaced Gove asChief Whip, whilstMatthew Hancock became the newMinister for the Cabinet Office, being replaced byAnna Soubry as Minister of State for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise.Priti Patel became the new Minister of State for Employment andRobert Halfon became aMinister without Portfolio.

TheMinister of State for Social Care portfolio was downgraded to aParliamentary Under-Secretary of State in 2016 under this ministry. It would not regain its former stature until 24 January 2018, under theSecond May ministry's2018 British cabinet reshuffle.[7]
