Schœlcher (French pronunciation:[ʃœlʃɛʁ];Martinican Creole:Chelchè) is a town and the fourth-largestcommune in theFrench overseas department ofMartinique. The town was namedCase-Navire until 1889, when it was renamed in honor ofFrench abolitionist writerVictor Schœlcher.[3]
It is located on the west (Caribbean Sea) side of the island of Martinique, and is part of the metropolitan area ofFort-de-France, the largest metropolitan area in Martinique.
