Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow appears inGotham, portrayed byCharlie Tahan in thefirst season and the first half of thefourth season, andDavid W. Thompson in all other appearances.[1][2][3] This version was injected with a serum designed to eliminate fear by his father, Gerald Crane (portrayed byJulian Sands), which instead amplifies Jonathan's fear of scarecrows and drives him insane.[4][5] After being institutionalized inArkham Asylum, Jonathan embraces his fears and recreates his father's toxin to become the Scarecrow, and allies with other criminals to terrorizeGotham City.[6][7][8]

The character is introduced inBatman: The Animated Series, voiced byHenry Polic II.[12] This version is a former psychology professor at Gotham University who was terminated for using his students as test subjects for his fear experiments. He develops a fear-inducing toxin and becomes the Scarecrow to seek revenge, which brings him into conflict with Batman. In later encounters, the Scarecrow uses his fear toxin on athletes to fix sporting matches and attempts to drug all of Gotham via its water supply.
Scarecrow returns inThe New Batman Adventures, voiced byJeffrey Combs.[12] For this series, he is given a "darker" revamp in both design and personality to make him more "scary". ProducersBruce Timm andPaul Dini described Scarecrow's redesign as a "Texas Chainsaw MassacreLeatherface kind of look. It really had nothing to do with being a scarecrow per se, but he was definitely scary [....] He looked like a hanged man who had been cut down and gone off to terrorize people. We weren't even sure if there was an actual guy in the suit."[13] Scarecrow also develops a new toxin that removes fear, leading Batman and other test subjects to become dangerously reckless in absence of it.
Scarecrow was meant to appear inJustice League Unlimited as a member ofGorilla Grodd'sSecret Society as a tribute to Scarecrow's appearance inChallenge of the Superfriends (see above), but the plan was scrapped due to character rights issues related to the "Bat-embargo".[14]
InBatman & Robin,Coolio makes a cameo appearance as a character credited as "Banker", who would have been revealed as Jonathan Crane in the cancelled sequelBatman Unchained.[15]
Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow appears inThe Dark Knight Trilogy, portrayed byCillian Murphy, and is the only villain to appear in all three films. This version wears aburlap sack with a built-inrebreather that doubles as agas mask for his fear experiments. Murphy explained that the relatively simple mask, as opposed to the full scarecrow costume seen in the comics, was utilized "to avoid theWorzel Gummidge look, because he's not a very physically imposing man—he's more interested in the manipulation of the mind and what that can do".[16]
Introduced inBatman Begins as a corruptpsychopharmacologist and Arkham Asylum's Chief Administrator, Crane secretly creates a fear-inducing hallucinogen and plots to use it withRa's al Ghul to plunge Gotham City into chaos. Crane exposes mafia bossCarmine Falcone,Batman, and assistant district attorneyRachel Dawes to his fear toxin, though Batman later subdues Crane with his own drug. Despite being institutionalized in Arkham, Crane escapes and takes the name "Scarecrow" amidst a mass breakout during Ra's attack on Gotham.

Scarecrow first appears inBatman: Arkham Asylum, voiced byDino Andrade. After being freed during the Joker's takeover ofArkham Island, he exposes Batman to his fear toxin and attempts to infect Gotham City's water supply, only to be attacked and dragged into the sewers byKiller Croc. In apost-credits scene, Scarecrow emerges from the ocean and grabs a floating crate of Titan formula.[33]
InBatman: Arkham City, Scarecrow leaves hidden radio frequency broadcasts for Batman that, when decrypted, reveal three messages: "I will return Batman", "You will pay for what you have done to me", and "Fear will tear Gotham City to shreds".[34] A boat in Arkham City's harbor also contains a human test subject for his fear toxin.[35]
Scarecrow appears inBatman: Arkham Knight, voiced byJohn Noble.[36][12] With the help of theArkham Knight, Scarecrow unites all of Gotham's criminals and forces a citywide evacuation by unleashing his new strain of fear toxin onHalloween.[37][38][39][40] Although Batman defeats the Knight andPoison Ivy sacrifices herself to neutralize the toxin's effects, Scarecrow takesCommissioner James Gordon andRobin hostage to force Batman to surrender at the ruins of Arkham Asylum. Scarecrow unmasks Batman as Bruce Wayne on live television before injecting him with fear toxin,[41] but Batman overcomes his fears and subdues Scarecrow with his own drug, after which he is taken into the Gotham City Police Department's custody.[42]

A younger Jonathan Crane appears inBatman: Arkham Shadow, voiced byElijah Wood.[43] AsBlackgate Prison's Director of Rehabilitation, he uses his patients as test subjects for "Project Umbra"—a hallucinogen designed to bring out thepsyche's repressed "shadow"—ultimately causing Arnold Wesker and Harvey Dent's respective transformations into theVentriloquist andTwo-Face. Crane firesDr. Harleen Quinzel when she discovers his crimes, but Batman puts an end to Crane's experiments and exposes him to his own hallucinogen. Crane is partially responsible for the scarring of Harvey Dent, when he attempts to make Matches Malone, actually Batman in disguise, forcibly inhale his fear toxin, and in the struggle, it causes the canister to break open and become acidic, disfiguring Harvey and completing his transformation into Two-Face.
