Sasha Roiz (Hebrew:סשה רויז; born October 21, 1973) is a Canadian actor known for his portrayals ofSam Adama in the science-fiction TV seriesCaprica andCaptain Sean Renard in the American fantasy TV seriesGrimm.

Early life

Roiz was born inTel Aviv[1] toRussian Jewish parents.[2][3] The family moved toMontreal in 1980. Roiz studied history before joining a theatre school in Montreal. He later graduated from theGuildford School of Acting inGuildford,Surrey.[4][5]

Career

Roiz has appeared in a number of popular television dramas, includingCSI: Miami,House,NCIS,The Mentalist,Lie To Me andTerminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He had a recurring role onWarehouse 13 asMarcus Diamond.[6]

In 2008, Roiz landed the role of Sam Adama onCaprica, a spin-off ofBattlestar Galactica. His character is a Tauron enforcer for the Ha'la'tha crime syndicate on Caprica who frequently goes head-to-head with his lawyer brotherJoseph Adama (played byEsai Morales),[7] and is also the uncle ofWilliam Adama.[8] On April 28, 2009, his role was expanded to series regular.[9] Roiz stated in an interview that it was later revealed to him that his character would be gay, something he felt was an opportunity to explore the complexity of agay character in a science fiction setting, as well as to explore the issue of homosexuality on a social level.[10] In 2012, he guest-starred in the second season of theJane Espenson–scripted romantic comedy web seriesHusbands.[11]

From 2011 to 2017, Roiz was a series regular onGrimm, a supernatural/fantasypolice procedural drama produced byUniversal Television forNBC, staying on the regular cast for all 6 seasons of the show.[12][13][14]

Roiz then went on to appear inTaken,Lucifer,Nice Iranian Girl,The Detectives,The Ballad of John St. George,The Order,Perfidy andFBI: International as well as having recurring roles onSalvation,Suits,Departure,9-1-1,The Endgame andChicago Med.[15]

Additionally, he voice-acted forSuperman: Red Son in 2020 andTurning Red in 2022.[16]
