Sarah M. Badel (born 30 March 1943) is a retired British stage and film actress. She is the daughter of actorsAlan Badel andYvonne Owen.
Badel was born in London to actorAlan Badel and actressYvonne Owen. She was educated inPoles Convent, Hertfordshire[1] and trained for the stage at theRoyal Academy of Dramatic Art; she is now an Associate Member.
Sarah Badel made her acting debut in January 1963 in theBristol Old Vic company's production ofHamlet, which was then touringIndia.[1][2] Her first appearance in London theatre came in October 1964 in the part of Bella Hedley inRobert and Elizabeth at theLyric Theatre. Badel made her Broadway theatre debut the following October playing Helen inThe Right Honourable Gentleman at theBilly Rose Theatre.
In 1966, she performed at theChichester Festival Theatre in such roles as Miss Fanny inThe Clandestine Marriage and Anya inThe Cherry Orchard. She returned to the Chichester Festival in 1967 and again in 1970. Other venues at which Badel has performed include theNational Theatre Company and St George's Playhouse inIslington.[1] She is also involved in many radio projects including adaptations ofA Moon for the Misbegotten,Mourning Becomes Electra, andLucia in London.[2]
Badel made her first film appearance in the 1970 British comedyEvery Home Should Have One.[1] Other films in which she has appeared includeThe Shooting Party in 1985 andNot Without My Daughter in 1991. Badel made her first appearance on television in 1962[1] portraying Perdita in a television adaptation ofThe Winter's Tale.
She played Flora Poste inCold Comfort Farm (1968) and Lizzie Eustace inThe Pallisers (1974). In the 1980BBC Television Shakespeare production ofThe Taming of the Shrew she played the lead female role of Katherine oppositeJohn Cleese as Petruchio. Badel also had a role as Sister Madgalen (Avice of Thornbury) in two episodes of the TV seriesCadfael (1994–1998).[3] Other television appearances includeShe Fell Among Thieves,The Irish R.M., the 1996 adaptation ofThe Tenant of Wildfell Hall, andJust Visiting in 2001.[citation needed] She played Patricia Bradshaw inThe Black Book, a 2009 episode ofMidsomer Murders.[4]
