Sara Hilary Haines[1][2] (born September 18, 1977)[3] is an American television host and journalist. She is known as one of the co-hosts of theABC daytime talk showsThe View andStrahan, Sara and Keke and the host of the game showThe Chase. For her work on the first two series, she receivedDaytime Emmy Award nominations. She has also worked as a correspondent onToday,ABC News, andGood Morning America.

Early life and education

Haines was born inNewton, Iowa,[2] and raised there with her three siblings.[4] She attendedSmith College inNorthampton, Massachusetts, where she received aBachelor of Arts degree ingovernment in 2000.[5] At Smith, Haines playedbasketball andvolleyball.[6][7]

Career

Haines began her career in theNBC Page Program.[5] After nine months in the program,[7] she became theproduction coordinator for NBC'sToday atRockefeller Center in 2002.[4][8] In 2009, Haines became the show's fourth-hour's contributing correspondent until departing in 2013.[8]

In 2013, Haines became anABC News correspondent as well as the pop news anchor for the weekend editions ofGood Morning America.[9] After multiple appearances as a guest co-host, Haines joinedThe View as a permanent co-host in the show's 20th season, which premiered on September 6, 2016.[10] On July 23, 2018,ABC announced that she would not return toThe View for season 22 and that she would co-hostGMA Day, later renamedStrahan and Sara, withMichael Strahan.[11][12] Haines made her final appearance as a co-host during the 21st season's penultimate episode on August 2.[13]

Haines's debuted as co-host ofGMA Day during the series premiere on September 10, 2018.[14] In August 2019, the program was renamedGMA3: Strahan, Sara and Keke, with the addition ofKeke Palmer as a third co-host.[15] Haines returned toThe View as a frequent guest co-host in 2020.[16] Following the reformatting ofGMA3 that same year, Haines permanently returned toThe View for its 24th season.[17] In November 2020, it was reported that Haines would host a revival ofThe Chase on ABC. The series premiered in January 2021.[18] She made an appearance as herself in the second episode of theDisney+ superhero seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, interviewing the characterJohn Walker about his role as the newCaptain America.[19]

Recognition

On her birthday in 2022, in appreciation of her accomplishments as a journalist and TV host, Newton's mayor Mike Hanson proclaimed September 18 as "Sara Haines Day" in Newton, Iowa.[20]

Personal life

Haines married attorney Max Shifrin in November 2014 after initially meeting online.[21] The couple resides inNew Jersey.[22] Their first child was born in March 2016,[23] followed by their second in December 2017,[24] and their third in June 2019.[25] Sara Haines hadpostpartum depression following the birth of her first child, which lasted approximately a year.[26]

Haines grew up in what she describes as a "conservative household" and identifies as a "left-leaning moderate".[27][28]
