Sahibganj district is one of the twenty-four districts ofJharkhandstate,India, andSahibganj is the administrative headquarters of this district.

Divisions

Sahibganj district is divided into two subdivions: Sahibganj subdivision and Rajmahal subdivision. It is further subdivided into nine Community development blocks:(Sahibganj subdivision)Sahibganj,Mandro,Borio,Barhait (Rajmahal subdivision)Taljhari,Rajmahal,Udhwa,Pathna andBarharwa.[2]

Economy

In 2006 theMinistry of Panchayati Raj named Sahibganj one of the country's 250most backward districts (out of a total of640).[3] It is one of the 24 districts in Jharkhand currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[3]

According to the2011 census Sahibganj district has apopulation of 1,150,567,[6] roughly equal to the nation ofTimor-Leste[7] or the US state ofRhode Island.[8] This gives it a ranking of 407th in India (out of a total of640).[6] The district has a population density of 558 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,450/sq mi).[6] Itspopulation growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 23.96%.[6] Sahibganj has asex ratio of 948females for every 1000 males,[6] and aliteracy rate of 52.04%. 13.88% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 6.29% and 26.80% of the population respectively.[6]
