Rufirallus is a genus of birds in the familyRallidae that are found in South America.
The genusRufirallus was introduced in 1856 by the French naturalistCharles Lucien Bonaparte. He listed three species in the genus but did not specify which should be considered as thetype species.[1] Subsequently the English ornithologistsPhilip Sclater andOsbert Salvin designatedP. cayanensis (misspelledcayennensis) as the type.[2] This specific name had been introduced byPieter Boddaert in 1783[3] and is ajunior synonym ofRallus viridis which had been introduced some years earlier in 1776 by the German zoologistPhilipp Statius Müller.[4][5] The genus name combines theLatinrufus meaning "rufous" with the genusRallus that had been introduced byCarl Linnaeus in 1758 for the rails.[6]
The genus formerly included only two species. The results of a 2023 multilocus molecular phylogentic study of the subfamily Laterallini by Emiliano Depino and collaborators led to a revision of the taxonomy.[7] The genus now contains the following five species:[8]
The genus previous included thechestnut-headed crake but this species is now placed in its ownmonotypic genusAnurolimnas.[8]
